March Marathon
Ballingarry National School is on the move! Christ the Saviour National School is participating in a 4 week virtual challenge to Run around Ireland and beyond this March. The Active Schools Initiative will bring learning outdoors this Spring encouraging the children to get out and get running while also improving fitness levels and promoting wellbeing.
Beginning on Monday 7th March and continuing for 4 weeks the children will work together with their class running laps of the school yard. Every lap matters and they will be counted each day to show the progress the children are making. Weekly updates will be shared across school and fundraising platforms documenting the wonderful places around Ireland they have reached. Our final day will be a running extravaganza on the GAA field and will showcase just how far the children have come. Our School is growing in numbers and additional funds are needed to enhance the schools sports and recreational areas making it a fun and enjoyable space for all our children.
The parent’s council have set up an IDonate fundraising page here: https://www.idonate.ie/event/3459_march-marathon.html

Seachtain na Gaeilge
Several month ago we successfully applied for a Bosca Leabharlainne. Those books have arrived, 25 beautiful Gaeilge books that support reading for fun. Even though we don't know all the words we are using our reading skills to help us understand.
We are:
1. Looking at the Pictures
2. Finding words that we know
3. Making connections to stories we already know.
Hopefully these books will help us to enjoy our Gaeilge even more.

We learned that:
- Wet weather on St Brigid's Day means a good summer.
- If you see a hedgehog on St Brigid's Day it means good weather.
- On St Brigid's Eve you should leave out cloth, ribbons and water to be blessed.
- Her dad had lots of dreams before she was born telling him to call her Brigid.
- She was very kind and generous.
- She wanted to be a nun so she could help people.
Thank You!!!

Arctic Theme in 3rd class
We made Arctic animals using clay. We all designed an Arctic animals. Once they were dry, we painted our Arctic animals. Take a look at our before and after pictures.
Arctic animal projects: each pair were given an Arctic animal to research. They researched all about the animal under the following headings: what it is, what it looks like, where it lives, what it eats, how it has adapted to the Arctic climate and any extra information. They compiled their facts onto posters and presented the facts our classmates. We really enjoyed learning from our classmates about the different Arctic animals.
We made blubber using soft margarine. We tested how long we could keep our hands in a basin of icy water for. We then added a layer of margarine to our finger to create the extra blubber layer that the Arctic animals have. We all found that we could not feel the icy water with the layer of blubber.
Magnets: for our STEM activity, we designed a race track using cardboard. We made our own paper cars and attached a paper clip to the back of it. Using magnets we had races against our classmates.
Arctic scene: we used paints, salt and cling film to create our Arctic scene. The salt added the effect of a starry night to our skies while the cling film created the ice effect.
Colours Day presentation to Ballingarry Park and Playground
We raised 700 euro on our recent colours day for Ballingarry Park and Playground Committee. A big thank you to all parents and families for your support.

They then presented their facts to the whole class. We also planned and designed a space buggy in our groups. We designed a new planet for our english writing task. We then painted a planet using a design of our choice.
Check out our 'FROM GRASS TO GLASS' projects.
There are a lot of young farmers in 3rd class so we decided to zone in on the milking process and learn all about it. After learning all about milking each pod group created a poster full of facts that they learnt. It was great to see all the cool facts the pupils had on this topic.
First Holy Communion 18th of September 2021
2nd Class - Outdoor Day
What a busy day we had!! We all brought our wellies and old clothes into school. First we headed to the park to find some autumn leaves. We learned that leaves have a special chemical made from sunlight called chlorophyll. This is what gives leaves their green colour. Deciduous trees lose their chlorophyll in autumn and that's when we can see the other colours in the leaves, such as red, yellow and brown. Evergreen trees stay green all year round. We collected leaves to use for Art and of course we stopped by the playground.
After lunch we carved 6 pumpkins. We used the seeds and offcuts to feed the birds. Some boys and girls planted the seeds so you never know, we might have a pumpkin patch next year!! In History we learned that the original Halloween tradition was carving turnips, we think pumpkins are much easier to carve!
We did some gardening then, dead heading and cutting back our wildflower garden, and digging up the flower beds in preparation for planting. We got pretty dirty but it was great fun!
Finally we used our pumpkins to do a Science experiment. We added baking soda, washing up liquid, water, food colouring and vinegar to our pumpkins and observed what happened.
A great day!
