First class recently went on a nature walk down to the local park in Ballingarry. One of their tasks was to go on a mini beast hunt where they collected and examined insects in their natural environment. First class enjoyed using the schools pooters, magnifying glass bug viewers, and insect nets and we learned all about the bugs we collected on our return to class.
We then enjoyed eating our lunch on the picnic benches down at the park and had some surprise ice creams to help cool us down after our busy day.

First class have just finished taking part in the Literacy Lift Off programme. This is an early intervention programme for helping literacy and writing levels. It is a daily literacy hour where first class in collaboration with other teachers will work on a range of literacy activities.
It is an intensive programme of Reading and Writing, which gives the pupils lots of opportunities to read books at their own level of competency. It gradually lifts the complexity of what they can do in both reading and writing by equipping them with the necessary problem-solving skills. Pupils on the programme would typically be expected to progress at the rate of one level per week.
The aim of Literacy Lift-Off is to make pupils constructive learners. It teaches them ‘how’ to problem-solve independently. Here are some of the stations first class enjoyed over the past 6 weeks.
Familiar Reading
Pupils read previously seen PM+ Readers.
Purpose: Development of enjoyment, fluency, comprehension and speed.
Word Work
They use magnetic letters on the whiteboard to make and break words.
Purpose: To show children how words work, so that they can make a fast visual analysis of their reading.
Writing
Pupils write sentences based on their own experiences, using words that they encounter in their readers.
Purpose: That they will learn how they can write their own messages by hearing and recording sounds in words, using analogy and learning unusual words.
New Reading
Encountering new texts each day challenges the pupils to discover new ways to go beyond their current operating ability and lift their literacy processing.
Purpose: Pupils learn to use strategic activities to read new texts.

Art in 2nd Class
2nd class have been studying a variety of artists this term. 1st up was Frank Stella. He used lines and bright colours to create optical illusions. His first exhibition used only black paint and was based on river deltas. He grew to dislike flat canvases and so used aluminium to make 3D art. We created 3D art, using lots of textures we found around the school. We also created 2D art using lots of different lines.
Damien Hirst liked studying life and death in his Art. He even had a dead cow in one piece. He used lots of Butterflies in his art, especially the wings. He also used some illusion in his work. He had lots of dot paintings. some of his paintings are the most expensive in the world.
Finally we studied Bruno Torfs. He creates sculptures based on his travels and people he meets. He opened aa huge outdoor gallery in his garden in Australia. It contains around 115 huge sculptures. We made clay creations and painted them. We really enjoyed this art.

Ballingarry
We wanted to help our new classmate Noel get to know the sights of Ballingarry.
We designed Travel Agent Brochures of our favourite places in Ballingarry and presented them on the Interactive whiteboard. Noel shared with us his favourite place from Cork too. We also went to visit these places around Ballingarry. Mrs McHale showed us photos of Ballingarry from 30 or 40 years ago. Some things have stayed the same and some things have really changed. We asked Mrs McHale about Ballingarry when she was small. Mrs McHale's favourite question was "What did Ballingarry look like when it was first discovered?!!"

Science week
For Science Week 2020, Ms Tangney’s class learned all about the effect of acid on an egg. First we had to predict what might happen, next we made daily observations and removed one egg from the vinegar on day 1, day 3 and day 5. By the time day 5 came around the egg was very stinky and the shell had completely changed texture. We were all very surprised that the inside of the egg stayed intact. We recorded all out findings in our Science copies. We can’t wait for the next experiment!

Senior infants have also been learning lots about different loud and soft sounds this month. We decided to design and make shakers as part of our science lesson.
We made our shakers using plastic bottles and the three materials we explored were sugar, pasta and rice.
We discovered that the rice and pasta made loud sounds when used as a shaker and the sugar made a soft sound.

Science week
As part of Science Week 2020 senior infants tried out a really cool experiment called “Make the Rainbow” using skittles and warm water. First they had to put the skittles in a circle around the outside of the plate, before we began the experiment they made predictions about what they thought was going to happen. Then then they had to pour a little bit of warm water over the skittles using a bottle. We waited and observed what happened.

What we have been up to in 5th and 6th class
Gardening : We were busy planting in the school garden. We prepared the soil and then planted daffodils, crocuses, and irises in one of the raised beds. We can’t wait to see them bloom in the springtime! Can you make a prediction on when the first one will sprout
2D Shapes: We investigated the tessellation of 2D shapes by making patterns. We also enjoyed creating our own tangrams.
Renewable energy: We are learning lots about different types of renewable energy in 5th and 6th class. We did a mini project in our groups on different forms of renewable energy. We created a poster outlining the advantages and disadvantages of this energy type and any important information we had learned.
We all learned about wind energy and how wind turbines work. We each came up with a proposal for where we think a wind farm could be developed in our locality.
We then created paper windmills.

October news from 2nd class
On October 15th, 2nd Class enjoyed the rare sunshine and visited the beautiful local park and we even got to go into the playground too which was so much fun!
Over the past few weeks the boys and girls in Ms. Barry’s second class have been learning all about Autumn.
We discovered that certain animals such as bears, bats and hedgehogs all hibernate for the winter and have to gather and store food before they go to into hibernation.
We also discovered that some birds migrate to warmer countries for the winter. We did a lot of work on researching swallows to discover why they migrate, the path they use when they migrate and where they go to when they leave Ireland. It was all super fun to learn about!
We then went on a nature walk to collect leaves and seeds. After our nature walk, we created wonderful artwork using the items which we collected.

We have been learning all about Irish Legends in Second Class. We read the story of The Brown Bull of Cooley which was about Queen Maeve and her husband Ailill who lived in Connacht. We watched a video clip of the Children of Lir and worked with our friends to discuss a new ending to that story.
We particularly enjoyed the story of Finn Mac Cool and the Giants Causeway. Here are some pictures that we drew of Finn, the Irish giant and Angus, the Scottish giant. We also sequenced the story and did some lovely comic strips. Ask us to tell you about this story. We hope you enjoy our pictures. |
Maths Week Fun
During Maths Week, Second Class completed lots work on 2D shapes! We learned all about the square, rectangle, triangle, circle, semicircle, hexagon, pentagon, and octagon. Did you know that a 2D shape is always, ALWAYS flat! We did so many fun activities that helped us to become shape superheros! We examined each shape and counted the number of sides and corners. We constructed squares, rectangles, triangles, circles and semicircles using geostrips and geoboards. We also folded the squares, rectangles, triangles, circles and semicircles in half and coloured them in! Do you know what shape a square becomes when folded and coloured in half? We even used picture boards to help us create lots of items all by using 2D shapes. |

Halloween fun- Can you recognise us?!
Pumpkin Competition
3rd class 'Autumn trip to the park'
As part of learning all about Autumn, we visited the local park. We carried out an ‘I spy’ scavenger hunt looking for different signs of Autumn. We took some rubbings of leaves and rough bark. We saw lots of different colour leaves all around the park. After we looked for signs of Autumn, we got to play in the playground. We had lots of fun on our trip to the park and wrote all about it when we got back to class.

Space Week 2020
For Space week, the 3rd class pupils hosted Go Fly Your Kite and Mary Immaculate College with a virtual workshop. We learnt all about the moon, space, rockets, the first landing on the moon and what it was like up on the moon. Later on that day, we all built our own kites that 'Go Fly Your Kite' had sent us. We all added some drawings to our kites. We tested the kites to see how they got on. We had so much fun learning all about space and creating our kites!!! Check out our brilliant designs!!
