Green School's News
Biodiversity is the fifth Green-Schools theme and looks at steps which can be taken to increase awareness of the importance of native plants, animals and habitats, and to increase species-richness in a locality. We received great news yesterday (24/04) that we have been awarded this fifth flag! Congratulations to all the boys and girls involved, and a special thank you to Mrs Murphy for her Trojan work and dedication in pursuing the flag.

Biodiversity
On 14th March we were very lucky to have a special visit from our Biodiversity expert, Geoff Hunt. He began his day with 2nd and 3rd class teaching us all about local garden birds. Our classroom has three bird feeding posts located outside our windows. We learned mainly about the Tit Family and Finch Family during this visit. The children explored ways of identifying correctly Goldfinch, Chaffinch, Bullfinch and Greenfinch. We also explored the Blue Tit, Great Tit and Coat Tit. The children learned to identify these birds according to their colour, certain behaviours and their individual songs. The children learned how to expertly draw a Blue Tit. Not only did the children thoroughly enjoy their lesson, they also learned so much from Goeff.
Science in 1st Class
The first class have been learning all about water recently. We have been studying the water cycle. We each made our own water cycle using a clear bag, water and some markers. We stuck our bags up on the window to allow the light to cause the water to evaporate. We are watching every day to see the water level go down due to evaporation. We had lots of fun making these.
10 @ 10
As part of the television programme, Operation Transformation, schools across the country took part in an active exercise on the 10th of February at 10 o'clock. We had lots of fun being active and love to incorporate exercise into lots of our lessons at school.
Grandparents' Day 2017
As part of Catholic school's week 2017, we invited the children's grandparents in to talk to the classes. We learnt a lot from them and everyone had a super day!
Christmas Assembly 2016
This morning we held our Christmas Assembly. We looked at pictures of our concert and made a special presentation to Mrs. Murphy, who did an amazing job with the music. Mr. Keogh also handed out Christmas Cheer certificates to the boys and girls who helped spread Christmas Cheer throughout the school. We all then sang a beautiful rendition of 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas'.

Bird Feeders
As part of our Green Schools Biodiversity programme we have recently set up some bird feeders. The steel posts were kindly made by our chairman Kevin Kennedy. The children in Mrs. Murphy's 2nd and 3rd class put the feeders in place on Monday 21st November, just in time for the cold snap of weather. We hope to encourage a variety of wild birds to our school yard. The posts have been erected outside classroom windows and will act as bird observatory areas.
The children in 2nd and 3rd class have been thoroughly enjoying our new bird observatory in our classroom. We have seen many birds since the feeders were put in place. We have discovered that the little Blue Tit birds love to eat peanuts, the House sparrow and Blackcaps love the fat ball feed and the Robins have been eating the wild bird seed. Of course some very cheeky crows and Jackdaws have been doing their best to eat here too.

Colours Day
Colours Day on Thursday 22nd December is in aid of the Simon Community. This collection is in association with Ballingarry Family Resource Centre.
European Union
In 5th and 6th we were learning about the European Union. Mrs McHale gave us some questions and we used the iPads to go online and find the answers. We made sure to use reliable sources such as Britannica Schools. We also learnt about creative commons licensing so we now only use images if their owners give permission. This is all part of learning to work responsibly online.
5th and 6th: World War II
5th and 6th learnt about World War II in history. It was very interesting but very sad to learn about all the lives that were lost. In memory of all the children who died in concentration camps, we took part in The Crocus Project. We planted crocus bulbs that will (hopefully) bloom in the spring. Keep an eye on the flower bed at the front of the school for progress.
Christmas Concert Time
This year the boys and girls from First to Sixth classes will be performing Matilda the Musical for their Christmas concert. The dress rehearsal will take place on Tuesday , 13th December at 11.30am, and the evening performance will be in the parish hall on Wednesday, 14th December at 7pm. The Junior and Senior Infants will be performing some wonderful Christmas songs as well on the night. Information in relation to tickets will be sent home soon. We look forward to seeing you all there! |
Hard at Work

The staff and management of Christ the Saviour National School would like to extend a warm welcome to our newest member of staff, Miss Thérese O'Loughlin. Miss O'Loughlin comes to us from Kildare and has a vast amount of experience teaching across many class levels. We are very lucky to have her on our team. She will be teaching 2nd /3rd class this year, covering Ms. O'Neil's maternity leave. |
Our School Garden
Our School Garden is under major reconstruction at the moment. Mrs. Murphy's father-in-law, Joe has lent us his expertise and is working so hard creating a beautiful , child-friendly garden. Check out the amazing progress so far. Thanks to Joe for his hard work, and also Mrs. Murphy for your amazing contribution to our Green School's effort! |
Can you help us?
We are looking for artistically minded people to lend us their talents in creating a wall mural in school. So if there is anybody out there, parent or other member of the community, who would like to collaborate with us on this project, we would be very grateful! Please contact Síle in the office for more information. |

Sports News
On Monday 26th of September the West Limerick Primary School football blitz was held in Mick Neville Park, Rathkeale for the 5th and 6th class girls. The 14 girls who represented Christ the Saviour N.S. were a credit to the school. They showed great athleticism and competed in a very sporting manner. In the qualifying round they defeated Adare Girls and Kilcornan. Both score lines ended up with Ballingarry scoring 5 goals and 4 points to no score in return. The semi-final versus Shauntrade was a much more challenging game. The Ballingarry girls worked relentlessly and became eventual winners. The final score was Ballingarry 3-0 Shauntrade 1-0.
The 5th and 6th class girls are now through to the Division 2 West Final which is scheduled to take place on Monday October 17th at 12 noon in Mick Neville Park. Well done to all involved and best of luck on October 17th. |
Snazzy New Look

New Yard Markings
Many of you will have noticed how vibrant the junior yard is looking now that we have new yard markings. The children, both old and young, are enjoying playing new games at small and big lunches. Thanks to the parents association, and everyone who supported their fundraising efforts, which enabled us to get our new yard markings.
A Warm Welcome
Welcome to our newest pupils!
Halfway through September and our Juniors are taking to school like ducks to water! They're having so much fun with their teacher, Ms. Tangney!
